Getting pregnant or avoiding pregnancy are the two major issues linked with knowledge of menstrual cycle. If you only know the chances of getting pregnant during different durations of menstruation/monthly cycle then you can have better chances of getting pregnancy or avoiding it. People are confused about the chances of getting pregnant and whether the chances are increased before period, after period or during. This is a normal question and you aren’t the first girl/lady thinking about it. Many women are also confused when they get pregnant and they doesn’t know their due date but due date calculator solves this problem.
Pregnancy is the fusion of male sperm with female egg which occurs after the sperm fertilized the egg in uterus of women. Unlike men the reproductive cycles of women are complex and pass through multitudes of ups, downs, hormonal changes and behavioral swings. The timing of ovulation i.e. fetching out of mature egg from ovaries make the best time of getting pregnant. Therefore, chances are different at different parts of monthly cycle.
First we will like to mention some general principles that will guide you in predicting you dates:
- Most women have a menstrual cycle of 28 days, if you are the one then the ovulation will be 14 days prior to your period. However, duration of normal cycles can vary from 28 days to 35 days. This means if a woman has a 35 day cycle then she will ovulate around day 21 and not 17.
- To put in easy words a woman can ovulate between 13 to 21 days before her next period depending on the length of her cycle.
- Lifetime of egg is shorter i.e. 12 to 24 hours. Therefore, timing becomes more important.
- Lifetime of sperm is longer then egg i.e. 5 to 6 days. Therefore having sex before or during ovulation is best.
- Female biological conditions can also determine ovulation. Like change in Basal Body Temperature, thickening of vaginal mucus and others which we will discuss later.
Chances of Getting Pregnant During Period:
Our predictions are based on estimations and not investigations. These predictions are in accordance of normal developments in female during her cycles and are mostly reliable. However, there can be changes depending on your biological conditions. Therefore, frankly speaking there are chances of both either getting pregnant or not getting pregnant.
Speaking about general population sex during period isn’t much desirable. However, your desires are your personal wishes and decisions. In a 28 days or more days cycle chances of getting pregnant are lesser. The reason is a long gap between ovulation as it occurs halfway before 1st day of period i.e. around 14th day. Whereas, the egg dies within a day. And you are at both odds, days ahead and days away from ovulation. Hence, commonly chances are rare.
But obviously there are exception like if the women has a shorter cycle. In such cases pregnancy is possible. By shorter cycle we mean a cycle of 21 to 24 days. Rational behind this is that when you have a shorter cycle, the gap between period and ovulation is shorter. So, such women might ovulate around 10th day. Do you remember our general principle about sperm? Yes, it can remain viable for 5 to 6 days. Imagine, a women with shorter period had sex by the end of her periods. And due to shorter cycles she will ovulate earlier. With sperm still viable at 4th, 5th or 6th day she still has the chances of getting pregnancy. However, it is much lower.
This time of intercourse is safe for those women who are trying not to conceive. Provided their cycles are of 28 days or more. However, as we have said there are chances always.
Chances of Getting Pregnant Just After Periods:
To put it in concept this is the best and most suitable time of getting pregnant. Review the general principles we have mentioned above and understand the beautiful and interwoven relationship between the sperm and egg. You must have heard before time is money and yes indeed it is, especially when you are planning to conceive.
Doing sex just after period means you are entering in to the fertility phase of your cycle. Just when the woman is done with period, her body ensues and triggers the veritable products of her reproductive cycle that are waiting for a partner to mate. Few days after the end of her period women ovulates. Imagine if you had sex on the 8th day and ovulation occurs on the 12th day. Then you might have a viable sperm waiting to fertilize the egg (remember lifespan of sperm is 5 to 6 days). So delaying the sex a bit more days seems are more probable solution for getting pregnancy.
A more simple way is to have frequent sex after the period ends. This way you will have two lines working one is the older viable sperms and other is the entry of fresher sperms with frequent intercourse.
Chances of Getting Pregnant Before Period:
As always we will recommend you to refresh the general principles and then link it with your question. If you have a cycle of 28 days or more then chances of getting pregnancy are very low as you might have ovulated between 14 days (if 28 day cycle) till 21 days (if 35 days cycle). Thus, the egg would have died due to its minute viability period i.e. less than one day.
This means this is the safest period (not only safe) for the couples who don’t want to conceive. If the cycle is longer safe days will be longer and if the cycle comprises of lesser days safe days will also be less. If you can detected the time of ovulation exactly through techniques you must be beyond the possibilities of getting pregnant. Delaying more days from ovulation will decrease the chances further. However, this is not favorable for couples who want to conceive but for sure there is no objection in enjoying conjugal relations with your partner.
How Can I Access the Timing of Ovulation?
Assessing ovulation is not a burdensome activity it just requires knowledge of few biological happening in your body:
- The calendar method.
- Charting the basal body temperature.
- Charting the cervical mucous thickening.
- Using an ovulation predictor kit.
- The Calendar Method:
This is a pretty simpler and easy method for those women who have regular cycles. However, if you are suffering from irregular cycles this method is useless for you. Adding to it this method is even simpler for women who have a cycle of 28 days. Because their ovulation will occur at the 14th day. A 28 day cycle is when Day 1 is the first day of your period and Day 28 is the last day i.e. a day before the 1st day of your next period).
In cases other than this regular cycles can be predicted by following these steps:
- Estimate the next time your period will start.
- From that day subtract 12 days and then subtract another four. This is how you will get two numbers or a range between two numbers.
- You have chances of ovulation within this range of five days you have calculated.
- Charting the Basal Body Temperature:
This method is simple and more accurate. But requires persistence and a bit of effort in charting your daily temperature. So, it requires a bit of effort.
Basal Body Temperature is the temperature of your body minus what is increased during activity. Means it is lowest temperature of your body. The lady has to calculate this temperature in the morning when she gets awake at her bed. And chart it regularly using a thermometer.
Now the key point is during ovulation the Basal Body Temperature (BBT) shoots a bit and increases to about 0.5 to 1 degree Fahrenheit. This is an indication that ovulation has occurred.
- Charting the Vaginal Discharge:
This method is also simpler and accurate but requires a bit of patience and regular follow up of vaginal discharge. However, if you have estimated your ovulation days using the calendar method you will not have to perform this for whole month but that specific period only
Normally the vaginal discharge of a woman is thin and even sometimes vagina is dry. During ovulation this mucous become thicker, clear, slippery and stretchy. This is a sign of ovulation.
- Kit for Predicting Ovulation:
This method is the most accurate method for predicting ovulation. In this hormone levels are estimated using a kit. The hormonal mechanism of ovulation is based on a hormone named Luteinizing Hormone (LH). Normally this hormone is released to a threshold. However, at the time of ovulation its levels raise suddenly known as LH Surge causing ovulation.
The hormonal kit measures the levels of this hormone and can predict the ovulation before a day or to. So you can plan accordingly for pregnancy
